WhatsApp scams
What is it?
WhatsApp scams range from fake prize messages and 'family in trouble' messages to full account takeovers using a stolen verification code.
How does it work?
Common versions include a message pretending to be a relative in an emergency asking for money, a fake WhatsApp verification request, or a hacked contact's account being used to ask you for funds. Attackers often ask you to forward a six-digit code, which is actually your WhatsApp verification code.
How do I recognise it?
- An urgent money request from a contact, especially with a changed tone or story.
- A request to share a six-digit verification code.
- Prize, lottery, or 'you've been selected' messages.
What should I do?
- Call the contact directly (not on WhatsApp) to confirm before sending money.
- Never share a WhatsApp verification code with anyone.
- Enable Two-Step Verification in WhatsApp settings.
What should I avoid?
- Don't rely on the tone of a text message alone to confirm someone's identity.
- Don't click links promising prizes or free data.

- Your bank, if money was already sent.
