Identity theft

What is it?

Identity theft is when someone uses your personal information — such as your ID number, address, or banking details — to commit fraud in your name.

How does it work?

Criminals may obtain your details through data breaches, lost documents, phishing, or SIM swaps, then use them to open accounts, apply for credit, or intercept services in your name.

How do I recognise it?

  • Accounts, loans, or subscriptions you don't recognise linked to your name.
  • Being denied credit unexpectedly, or notified of accounts you didn't open.
  • Mail or notifications about services you never signed up for.

What should I do?

  • Check your credit profile through a South African credit bureau for unfamiliar accounts.
  • Report suspected identity theft to your bank and to the South African Police Service.
  • Keep evidence of anything fraudulent opened in your name.

What should I avoid?

  • Don't delay reporting once you notice unfamiliar accounts or activity.
  • Don't discard documents with personal or ID information without shredding them.

Where can I get help?

  • South African credit bureaus (for a credit report and possible fraud alert).
  • The South African Police Service.
  • Your bank's fraud department.
