What to do after a data leak

A calm, practical sequence for handling news that your data was exposed.

First, find out exactly what was exposed — email, password, ID number, or banking details — since the response depends on that.

If a password was involved, change it immediately, along with any other account using the same password.

If your ID number or banking details were exposed, tell your bank so they can watch for related fraud.

Be extra cautious of follow-up messages referencing the leaked details, since scammers often use them to appear credible.
