How to secure your email

Your email is often the key to every other account — here's how to lock it down.

If someone gets into your email, they can usually reset the passwords on most of your other accounts. That makes it worth securing first.

Use a long, unique password for your email specifically — never reuse it anywhere else.

Turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA), ideally using an authenticator app rather than SMS where the option exists.

Check your recovery email and phone number periodically to make sure they're still yours and up to date.

Review connected apps and login sessions occasionally, and remove anything unfamiliar.
